IrDA is a standard defined by the IrDA consortium (Infrared Data
Association). It specifies a way to wirelessly transfer data via infrared
radiation. The IrDA specifications include standards for both the physical
devices and the protocols they use to communicate with each other. The
IrDA standards have arised from the need to connect various mobile devices
together. (Primary use for IrDA is to link notebooks or various personal
communicators; however, even video cameras are sometimes equipped with an
IrDA interface.)

The overall goal of this project is to make an implementation of the
IrDATM standards specifications for the Linux kernel. The code is licensed
under the GNU Public licence (GPL) and is now included in Linux-2.2.x and
Linux 2.4.x kernel series.

The Familiar Project is composed of a group of loosely knit developers all
contributing to creating the next generation of PDA OS. Currently, most of
our development time is being put towards producing a stable, and full
featured Linux distribution for the Compaq iPAQ h3600-series of handheld
computers, as well as apps to run on top of the distribution.
